Tiny wren...big message...

My little 'edge of the city' back garden gets regular bird visitors but mostly of the larger variety - blackbirds, pigeons, magpies and the occasional seagull, very rarely do we get any small birds not even sparrows.  So when this little fella visited yesterday I became silly excited.

I always pay attention to the birds that visit; pigeons, seagulls and magpies often have messages for me so when my little wren visitor hopped about the garden yesterday I sought a meaning from it, this is what wren has to say:

Wren represents a new phase of energy, increased activity and brings in more clarity to your mental and emotional vibes.

There will also be an increase in your creative abilities and confidence to adapt to new situations.

Wren provides support and focus so that you can take a really good and honest look at what it is that you want and need.  He will help you sift through the flotsam and jetsam and see what is what.

He can also help bring clarity and insight to dreams and meditations.

Wren also brings a new lease of life to relationships whether they are work, home, family or friends.

He helps you to see how joyful and happy your life really is and helps you bring light to your whole being.

He is a little package of determination, strength, balance, timing and resourcefulness with an added hint of multitasking abilities.

Wren shows you how to listen to your body and trust your intuition.

Listen to the wisdom of this tiny bird who brings a huge amount of insight, inner guidance and strength to allow you to shine.

Thank you little wren ♥

Finding magical properties...echinoid

Whilst working with the Arc of the Goddess course this month I was drawn to connect with a fossil, the echinoid - in my journeying with it I was prompted to do some research - there are plenty of myths and legends associated with them so I thought I would share with you:

The Magical Echinoid

Echinoids have lived in the seas since the Late Ordovician, about 450 million years ago. The living representatives of echinoids are the familiar sea-urchins that inhabit many shallow coastal waters of the world.

Echinoids are marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata and the class Echinoidea. They have a hard shell (test) covered with small knobs (tubercles) to which spines are attached in living echinoids. The test and spines are the parts normally found as fossils.

The Echinodermata take their name from the Greek words for spiny skin, a very conspicuous feature of many living echinoids. Since ancient times they have been revered as objects of religious or superstitious power.

In Denmark, echinoids were thought to be thunderbolts, and used to protect against lightning and witchcraft.

In England, echinoids have been called Sugar Loaves, Fairy Loaves, Shepherd's Crowns and Pixies' Helmets.

Originating from Suffolk in Eastern England, the folklore name of Fairy Loaves was given to the heart urchin Micraster because they resembled round loaves of bread. People would place an urchin by the heath in hope that it would ensure the household would always have bread. If the household went without bread for more than a week it was thought witchcraft had stopped the Fairy Loaves' protective powers.

Shepherds Crowns and Pixies Helmets
According to Bassett's 'Formed stones, folklore and fossils' (1982), shepherds may have come across these echinoid fossils while caring for their sheep on the downlands of southern England. The shape of some echinoids resemble a slightly pointed hat or crown hence the reference to tiny headgear. They were believed to bring prosperity and good luck.

Witch's Charms
The five lines across the fossil were considered by witches to resemble the five points of the Pentagram and were considered as magical prized possessions by those who collected them.

The fairy loaf in Suffolk was called 'pharisee-loaf' which at some point became 'farcy-loaf'. Farcy is a disease in horses and it has been suggested that the fossils were also used as charms by farm horsemen.

In other myths, fossil echinoids are considered to be Snakes' Eggs. It was thought that at midsummer magical Snake Eggs were formed by the froth from snakes. The froth, shaped into a ball, was believed to have the power to protect one from deadly poisons. If stolen from the snakes during midsummer's eve and kept on a piece of cloth, the ball would retain its magical powers.

They were once frequently displayed on the windowsills of Sussex cottages as good luck charms, to protect the cottage from being struck by lightning, or for predicting rain (this could be true, as moisture present in the atmosphere may condense on the fossil first). They were also supposed to keep milk fresh.

Another name for echicoids was eagle stones, as the marks on them resemble claw marks.

In Denmark, they were thunderstones. Crusaders collected Jewstones, which were echinoids from Ancient Judea. They wore them as lucky amulets.

Some echinoids are heart-shaped, so people have thought that they were the hearts of children, turned to stone.

Another legend says that Balthazar, one of the three Wise Men was following the Star of the Nativity when he met a girl. To remind him of his journey, the star drew itself onto the local rocks!

In the USA they are called Sand Dollars.

In Scandinavia they were used to keep away spells and witchcraft. Beer was poured over them as an offering and they were sometimes anointed with butter. They were also thought to offer protection from elves.

In Switzerland the owner of a 'thunderstone' would whirl it, on the end of a thong, three times round his head, and throw it at the door of his house at the approach of a storm to prevent lightning from striking the house.

In Italy they were hung around children's necks to protect them from illness and to ward off the Evil eye.

In Roman times they were sewn inside dog-collars along with a little piece of coral to keep the dogs from going mad.

In the French Alps they were used to protect sheep, while elsewhere in France they were thought to ease the pains of childbirth.

In Burma they were used as a cure and preventative for appendicitis.

In Japan were thought to cured boils and ulcers.

In Malay and Sumatra they were used to sharpen the kris, a ceremonial dagger, and were considered very lucky objects.

Among the Slavs they cured warts on man and beast. They were also thought to be able to reveal hidden treasure if used during Passion Week.

Stomach Remedy
It has also been suggested that the chalk filling the echinoids may be an effective cure for an acidic stomach. Given the composition chalk (calcium carbonate) this is perhaps not such an unreasonable idea. According to Kennedy (1976) these 'chalk eggs' could also cure sea-sickness and many travellers would not board ship without them.

Pagan Portals - Brigid

Pagan Portals Brigid is the latest book from the fabulous author Morgan Daimler and is obviously about the fascinating goddess Brigid. It will be published on 25th March but is available now for pre-order.

Meeting the Celtic Goddess of Poetry, Forge, and Healing Well

The official blurb:

"Pagan Portals - Brigid is a basic introduction to the Goddess Brigid focusing on her history and myth as well as her modern devotion and worship. Primarily looking at the Irish Goddess but including a discussion of her Pan-Celtic appearances, particularly in Scotland. Her different appearances in mythology are discussed along with the conflation of the pagan Goddess with Catholic saint. Modern methods for neopagans to connect to and honor this popular Goddess include offerings and meditation, and personal anecdotes from the author's experiences are included as well.
Who was Brigid to the pre-Christian pagans? Who is she today to neopagans? How do we re-weave the threads of the old pagan Goddess and the new? Learn about Brigid's myths among the pagan Irish, the stories of Bride in Scotland, and the way that people today are finding and honoring this powerful and important deity to find the answer."

As with all Morgan's books this is well researched, very well written and taken from her extensive knowledge on the subject and her own personal experiences.  If you have any interest at all in this intriguing goddess then this is the book for you.

Hair cut frippery...

Yes this is a blog post based on a haircut...it might seem all about frippery but I think it is actually quite a bit more...think about Samson and Delilah...

In my 47 years on this planet I have had pretty much every hair style in the book from crew cuts and spikes through the 80s Flock of Seagulls fringe to perms, straight, curly, flicked, short, mid, long, every style of bob possible and even a mullet...and every colour too including green (although that was by mistake).

However for the past few years I have had long hair, very long hair going way down my back.  Why? well I could wash it and leave it without styling, I could straighten it, curl it or pin it up and to be perfectly honest I thought it was 'witchy'.

Then last year it got so long it started to get on my nerves, it got caught in buttons and handbag straps and was always in my face whenever I tried to do anything (write, type, cook, clean etc) and it started to look straggely.  So I had 8" cut off.  And then I felt frumpy...there is no pleasing some women...but it grew again until it was way down my back once more.

But for the past few weeks I have felt like a change, it could be the time of year, it could be my cycle of life but last week I picked up the phone and made an appointment at the hairdressers.  This is of course after several long conversations with my very patient husband who assured me that he would still love me without long hair...

I sat in the salon and the lady asked "what would you like today" - my reply was "a revamp"...I followed that up with "do whatever you want with it, I want it much, much shorter and I don't care what style as long as it isn't mumsy and looks funky"...

She cut my hair short, to my jaw line and feathered it all.

I came out of the salon walking on air with a HUGE feeling of relief as if a weight had been lifted...which it had really...there was more hair on the salon floor than there was left on my head.

Now usually when I have taken the plunge to go from long hair to short I start to regret it after a few days but I can say with confidence that this time there is no such feeling, in fact I keep thinking now that it could be even a bit shorter.

It was time for a change and it has left me feeling so much better.

It was a lesson for me in trusting my intution, in trusting the hair dresser and to know that I don't have to have long flowing hair to be a witch or indeed to be and feel attractive.   Let's face it I am no spring chicken but I definitely didn't want to have a 'middle aged' lady hair cut but what I have is good and I am very pleased to not be tied to long hair just because I felt I ought to keep it.

I put off having my hair cut because of what I thought others might think and how I felt I 'ought' to look...following and trusting my intuition was definitely the right choice to make...

Working magic...PROSPERITY

We all need a bit of prosperity now and then whether it is to pay the bills or treat ourselves to a much needed holiday but I also think of wealth and prosperity as outside of the whole money thing too, we can be prosperous in anything that we do, what we create and how full our lives are.  There is a full moon coming up (Monday 20th) tap into that amazing power to help boost your magic.

Intent: PROSPERITY

I wrote the word 'prosperity' on a piece of paper and used that as the centre then I charged each herb/spice and crystal that I chose to use with my intent and put them on my altar around the intent paper. I also chose a green candle to light as well. I didn't have a plan or design in mind I just used my intuition.

How many??!

How many??!

So this happened...

On 31st January 2014 Moon Books published my fourth book - Pagan Portals Moon Magic and since then it has sold like the proverbial 'rat onna stick' passing the 5000 copies sold mark in January.

I can only send out my sincere thanks to everyone that has purchased a copy, I am overwhelmed to be quite honest.  As my journey as a published author only started in 2013 (with Pagan Portals Kitchen Witchcraft, which has to date sold well over 6k copies) it is all a bit surreal.

♥ THANK YOU ♥

Working Magic...LOVE

Now before you get all squinky and complain about love and hearts and this time of the year (heading towards Valentine's Day) being horrible for single people...(I have already had one complaint along those lines about a Kitchen Witch blog that showed how to make heart crafts)...LOVE doesn't have to be the romantic or passionate kind unless you want it to.  The love I am working with on the New Moon today is about love of yourself, loving the person that you are and loving the life that you have created for yourself.  This is a soft, gentle inner love that we sometimes forget about.

Love that you are who you are, love that you have friends and family, love that you have created a life for yourself that you enjoy, love that you can create and shape your world around you, love that you can choose what people to share it with.  And if you don't love any of that find out why and change it.  YOU are in control and YOU are amazing and wonderful and special and all those lovely fluffy things.

Let's share the lurve...be loud, be proud, be in LOVE with who you are.

Help...I need somebody's help...won't you please, please help me...

For the book that I am currently writing - Pagan Portals The Cailleach I commissioned some artwork for the front cover.  When I say 'commissioned' what I actually mean is that I asked my beautiful and talented 15 year old daughter to draw a sketch for me then I asked my equally talented (although handsome not beautiful) husband to work his graphics magic and turn it into a book cover.

I am enormously pleased with the sketch but as hubby did several book cover options now I can't decide which one I like the best...so I am asking for your input pretty please with sugar on top.

If you have a spare minute I would love for you to hop on over to my author facebook page and like or comment on the book cover image that you like the best.

Huge thanks in advance.
